That means earlier reassurance when everything looks healthy, and faster action if we spot anything that needs support or referral.
In Scotland, NHS-funded eye examinations are available at community optometry practices to those who are ordinarily resident in the UK, and you can book directly without needing a GP referral.
Who gets a free NHS eye exam?

Everyone ordinarily resident in the UK is entitled to a free NHS eye examination at a community optometry practice in Scotland — no GP referral needed. Routine recall is normally every two years, or every year if you are under 16, aged 60 or over, diabetic, or have a family history of glaucoma (aged 40+).
If your eyes change between recalls, or you have new symptoms, a supplementary NHS examination is also free. NHS optical vouchers can help with the cost of glasses if you receive certain benefits.
