The Eye Test.

The Aitchison eye examination has three functions: To assess how well you see and to prescribe spectacles; to check how the eyes work together in binocular vision and motility; to check the health of your eyes and detect any general health problems that may be evident. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and many other eye diseases may be detected through an eye examination.

Your eye examination will include:

  • Anterior eye and cornea examination
  • Distance and near vision check
  • Eye coordination and muscle balance test
  • Focusing capability and reflex check
  • Peripheral vision assessment
  • Personal health history
  • Refractive analysis
  • Retina, optic nerve and blood vessel assessment
  • Visual field check plus eye pressure check where appropriate

How much, how often?

Eye tests are free to everyone in Scotland under the NHS. At Aitchison we usually recommend patients take regular eye examinations every one to two years, and especially if you are:

  • Age 40+
  • Diabetic
  • From a family with a history of glaucoma

Regular eye tests are fundamental to the health of your eyes. When detected early enough, such serious conditions as cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration can be successfully treated.

Time well invested

Whether you are visiting for a check-up, advice, or an eye exam, at Aitchison we will spend the required time ensuring everything is thoroughly checked.

In fact, we’re so committed to customer service, that on average we spend up to a third more time with you than other high street opticians.

This helps us fully understand your vision, how we can best care for it and bring you the ultimate reward of the healthiest possible eyes.
